Occupational Technician – Audiometrist

Minimum Qualifications Required
Certificates in Audiometry, Spirometry and Vision Testing
Registrations and Experience
Must be registered with SASOHN as an Audiometrist
Minimum 6 month working experience
Preferably hold valid SA driver’s license, vehicle
Must hold a valid SA ID or work permit
Personal abilities and skills
Customer service skills, sensitivity and understanding, to be thorough and pay attention to detail, thinking and reasoning skills, excellent verbal communication skills, knowledge of psychology, counselling skills including active listening and a non-judgemental approach, the ability to work well with others, to be able to carry out basic tasks on a computer or hand-held device
Administers audiometric screening and threshold tests, generally pure-tone air conduction, to individuals or groups, under supervision of AUDIOLOGIST or OTOLARYNGOLOGIST.
Fits earphones on subject and provides instruction on procedures to be followed.
Adjusts audiometer to control sound emitted and records subjects' responses.
Performs pulmonary-function, lung-capacity, diffusion capacity, and blood-and-oxygen tests to gather data for use by physician in diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary disorders: Confers with patient in treatment room to explain test procedure
Explains specified methods of breathing to patients and conducts pulmonary-function tests, such as helium dilution and pulmonary mechanics, arterial blood gas analyses, and lung-capacity tests, such as vital capacity and maximum breathing capacity tests, using spirometer or other equipment.
Measures expired air, using various analysers.
Observes and records readings on metering devices of analysis equipment, and conveys findings of tests and analyses to physicians for interpretation.
May perform blood analysis tests to measure such factors as oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions, haemoglobin saturation and levels, and pH of blood, using blood gas analyser.
May measure sweat chloride to test for cystic fibrosis, using computerized analyser
May assist physicians in special procedures such as bronchoscopy
